The main Gucci make-up artist Thomas de Klyver, who was directly involved in the restart of the line makeup brand, is now in isolation in London, where he gave an exclusive interview to “Kommersant-Style” — on the right means beauty for all seasons, about the sources of inspiration and how to diversify your stay at home. Why Gucci? How did it happen that you started working with this brand?— My agent called me one evening and said, “Alessandro Michele wants to meet you… tomorrow morning.” I said, “Okay!” And literally jumped on the next plane to Los Angeles. The next morning we had Breakfast together and talked. And in the evening of the same day I was informed that Gucci hires me for a beauty shoot, which was held for the then not yet released lipsticks. It was very exciting to be part of this process.— I know you worked as a beauty editor, tell me more about this experience. You continue to work in this field, working with Gucci?— To be a beauty editor is, well, because you work side by side with inspiring people who can implement their best ideas. This is my favorite part of the job and as editor and as a makeup artist — is communication with people. The same applies to Gucci — Alessandro maintains an open, relaxed atmosphere, a feeling of absolute freedom. It brings the best results for the birth and realization of the most daring ideas (Thomas is the editor of the departments of beauty magazines Dazed and Id.— “Kommersant Style”).— A new line of cosmetics brand, in my opinion, looks pretty old school. What do you think about this design?— Yes, the bottles are such a great classic, so we pay tribute to vintage makeup. Some items in the collection, such as, for example, lipstick Rouge a Levres Satin, decorated with unusual intricate engraving design Alessandro Michele. Each piece of the collection literally has the weight and looks like a gift is not “disposable” items, but something special, something that will make you feel a certain way when you use it, is a kind of ritual. The new powder is delicate and unusual fragrance, tell us a little about it. The powder smells like flowers, and personally I find it very nostalgic. This fragrance takes you as if in time, in a sense representing all the people in history who used makeup to Express myself and to varying degrees, experimented with his looks.— What item cosmetics collection, Gucci is most needed and why? I think it’s a lipstick, a classic product. I really like its versatility — easy to apply, it is always at hand, and this is the fastest way to transform your exterior and change the mood. For example, red lipstick, such as Satin Rouge a Levres in shade Goldie Red, perfect for a man of any age, gender, race, sexual orientation. I always try to follow that approach in cosmetics and very happy to work with the brand that support the same principles.Publication of Thomas de Kluyver (@thomasdekluyver) Jan 31, 2020 at 2:30 am PST— Now we all have to stay home. Could you give us some advice that was current at the time of quarantine? Do I need to continue to apply makeup in the morning as before?— I believe that now really is the time to once again start to enjoy applying makeup, to get pleasure from it. If you work from home, then take your time and paint for the usual five minutes. You have the wonderful opportunity to spend a little more time. You can do makeup for myself, not for other people to try new shades, and create new images — even when it concerns the new shape of your eyebrows or applying a little more gloss on the cheekbones. Makeup can also help to regain the usual procedure, if you feel insecure in the current situation. The execution of our daily morning rituals, in my opinion, can have a very calming effect.— What do you do now at home and where you found the quarantine?— I am in isolation at home in London. Use this time to finally do research, read books, watch movies. And, of course, I always draw the sketches, the sketches. Despite the difficult situation, there are positive effect is that we can now slightly reduce the pace of work and take a break in order to invent and create new ideas.Publication of Thomas de Kluyver (@thomasdekluyver) 29 Feb 2020 6:45 PST— Tell us about the sources of his inspiration, they continue to work?— In my opinion, the best sources of inspiration are those that never run out, and will be updated constantly, thus presenting you with new ideas. For me it nemestrina subculture that is constantly changing and where you can always find something unusual, you just have to keep reading, visit the exhibition (albeit online) and interested in the world around them.— You have an account in Instagram? Do we even need now the social network?— Yes, there is, and I think that social networks in such a time as now, can be really useful, unless we let them take us over in full. It is important to stay in touch with other people and to follow what is happening in the world. Some of us are now showing truly extraordinary creativity in Instagram. I am very glad to see that people derive maximum benefits from the current situation and create art that would not have appeared in other circumstances.Interviewed By Irina Kirienko
