MOSCOW, 9 may. /TASS/. Russian President Vladimir Putin on Victory Day laid red roses at the Eternal flame at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Alexander garden to commemorate the victims of the great Patriotic war.

Usually this ceremony takes place after the Victory parade on red square, which this year was postponed due epidemiological situation. The head of state traditionally carries flowers to the Eternal flame is also held annually on 22 June, the Day of memory and grief, and February 23 — the Day of defender of the Fatherland.
the Ashes of the unknown Soviet soldier was moved from a mass grave in the suburbs and solemnly reburied in the Alexander garden in 1966. The following year there was opened a memorial, a key element of which was the Eternal flame, and also the alley of the hero cities: Leningrad, Kiev, Minsk, Stalingrad, Sevastopol, Odessa, Kerch, Novorossisk, Brest fortress, Tula, Murmansk and Smolensk.
Since 1997 at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier constantly is on the watch guard — “Post number 1”. In 2009, the monument was given the status of a national memorial of military glory, and the complex was soon supplemented by a stele in honor of cities with the same honorary title.
