(Cannes) Selfies and autographs: American actor Johnny Depp was greeted with fervor on Tuesday evening in Cannes, where he came to present the opening film Jeanne du Barry, despite the controversy surrounding his presence.
Dark suit, ponytail and sunglasses, the American took several minutes to greet the many fans who were waiting for him at the entrance to the red carpet. Some also chanted his name.
Indulging in hugs, Johnny Depp then took the path of the red carpet. In Jeanne du Barry, he plays the main role, that of King Louis XV.
He then entered the large room where the opening ceremony is held, then the screening of this feature film, hand in hand with its director Maïwenn, before being applauded there.
The 59-year-old actor has been banned from film sets in the United States since the trials that pitted him against his ex-wife Amber Heard on charges of domestic violence and mutual defamation.
Mr. Depp was not convicted on the merits and denied any violence.
On Tuesday, a collective of French actresses and actors criticized the Cannes Film Festival, judging that it rolls out “the red carpet to men and women who attack”, in particular in reference to the actor.
