Around 2,600 of these systems had to be shut down. According to the association, the other defects could be remedied on the spot. Most of the elevators complained about had only “minor defects”, it said.

“Defects in elevators such as wearing suspension ropes, defective controls or failed emergency call systems are a danger for users and must be remedied as quickly as possible,” said association managing director Joachim Bühler. According to this, at least almost 650 accidents were registered last year where people were injured.

The association also warned on Tuesday that elevator systems could also become the target of cyber attacks. “A potential gateway for cyber attacks is the building technology networked in the Internet of Things (IoT), which also includes elevator systems,” Bühler said. “Elevator controls and emergency call systems connected to the Internet in particular must be protected as far as possible from digital attacks.” Binding specifications and legal regulations are lacking.
